Candles – Symbolism

Standard

Candles have always had a distinctive place in our society, and as such they represent an incredible link that taps into our past. In their own unique way, candles radiate messages of romance, passion, security, warmth, hope, spirituality, and mystery, to name just a few. Today, candles are used mainly for their aesthetic value and scent, particularly to set a soft, warm, or romantic ambiance, and for emergency lighting during electrical power failures. Scented candle are used n aromatherapy. Deeply rooted in almost every religious and spiritual practice, creed and nationality, there is something peculiar and symbolic in a solitary flame and the aura of light surrounding it. It communicates with our souls. It speaks beyond words.  Candles symbolize enlightenment, inspirations, religious clarity, and comfort.  No matter how thick the darkness, the light of one candle conquers it. No matter how solitary one flame is, it is never alone or lonely for its light knows no boundaries and touches eternity. People of all faiths and walks of life, and many different creeds, have been joining together in a candlelight vigil to grieve, pray or celebrate. Candles are an integral part of our identities, they have been playing an important role in both our collective and individual consciousness.

Although we are live in modern times with electricity and such, very few of us haven’t had contact with candles. From the very first blazing encounters on a birthday cake, where candles are introduced as a magical agents which help our wishes came true, to every possible ritual and practice of social initiation, rite of passage or pleasure lubricant, candle flame has been our constant companion. Our initial enchantment with birthday candles is precursor to our belief that magic and candles naturally go together. Symbolism of birthday candles is not the only candle symbolism we are exposed to from the earliest days. No matter what religion we are born into, there are sanctuaries and special places to light a candle for health, protection, blessing and loving memory of departed ones. Candles are believed to connect people with divine, and with the deceased. They send our message beyond the boundaries of the visible and material world. In a candle light, the material world and the world of the Spirit are met.

Many couples have a Unity Candle at their wedding. Two outside candles are lit by the couple’s mothers to represent their lives to this moment. These distinct flames, each burning alone, represent the faith, wisdom and love received from their parents. Together, the couple lights a center candle, symbolizing the union of their lives. Their thoughts shall be for each other, and they will share both joys and sorrows. The flames of the two smaller candles remain lit to show how although they are now one, they are still each unique individuals.

A candle represents love which can light our spouse’s world.

A candle wipes out darkness and shows us how love can brighten our beloved’s life.

When we are near a candle, we feel warmth, just as we feel warmth from the love of our spouse.

A candle can give a sense of direction, and can draw people together, reminding us of how our love is a binding force also.

When a candle burns, the melting wax on the candle in a way disfigures the candle, representing the risk and element of pain that exists in a love relationship.

A candle, in order to fulfill itself, must burn itself out. If a candle is never lit, it never fulfills it’s purpose.

Candle tips

Standard

As mentioned before, we feature two candle companies at Scentsations. Root Candles and Kringle Candle, both made in America.  As you can tell from previous posts, we are striving to provide more made in the USA items.

Some general candle tips:

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended
  • Never burn a candle near anything flammable
  • Keep burning candles out of reach of children and pets
  • Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
  • Avoid burning your candle in a draft to minimize smoke
  • If your candle is burning unevenly, simply move the extinguished wick to the center with spoon
handle while the wax is still soft.
  • Although candles may smell like food, they are not edible.  seriously not funny but you would be amazed at how many candles in store I throw away due to teeth marks!
  • Don’t blow your candle jar out.  Extinguish by using a wick dipper or spoon and tipping the flame into the melted wax pool.  This will rehydrate your wick and help for a longer, more even burn.  You will also not have any smoky left in air.
  • Remove all packaging before lighting.
  • Place on a protected, heat-resistant, dry surface, away from anything that can catch fire, and out of reach of children and pets. Use holders designed for the particular candle style.

For added peace of mind, every Root candle wick is carefully designed to self-extinguish. However, it’s important that you trim your wick to 1/4 inch from the top of the candle before each use.   I have to tell you, I have never had to trim a wick.  They make their own cotton wicks which curve slightly when burning.

Root Candles – The Best Candles in America, Made in America Since 1869

Standard

At Scentsations, we feature 2 candle lines.   Root Candle and Kringle Candle.  I have carried many candle companies through the years and recently just fazed Yankee Candle out.

This week, I will feature both so you can understand why these two companies, make our cut.  For Root it is quality, variety and value for me!

1.  Honest, integrity, fabulous craftmanship, made in America.

Since 1869, Root Candles of Medina, Ohio, has been an industry-leading, family-owned company renowned for innovative ideas, aesthetic enhancements and the highest standards of quality. Now in its fifth generation, the Root family continues to extol the virtues of honesty, integrity, and diligent craftsmanship. These qualities were exemplified by Root Candles founding father and American original, Amos Ives Root.

His tradition of excellence, along with a genuine commitment to customer satisfaction and service, defines and fuels Root’s strong brand loyalty today. Root Candles devotion to purity, honesty and quality is renowned. Each Root candle is carefully handcrafted using processes mastered through five generations of craftsmanship combined with the latest in manufacturing technologies. The results are pure and simple: Root Candles are highly regarded for complex bouquets of subtle fragrances and sophisticated color palettes, important factors for discerning candle lovers.  Made in America since 1869.

What do you call candles that have been crafted with passion and perfection by the same family for five generations and more than 140 years? What do you call candles that use the purest beeswax, an all-natural color palette and sophisticated, essential oil fragrances? What do you call candles that are consistently flawless, cleaner burning, longer lasting and elegantly designed? What do you call the best candle in America, made in America? If you call them Root Candles… you’d be right.

Votive candles burn for 20 hours for just $2.49 at Scentsations.  We have over 50 fragrances to choose from

Tapers burn a slow… one and a 1/2 hours and inch.

Pillars burn 17 hours an inch without dripping or tunneling.

All natural beeswax and soy plus only the best essential oil fragrances.

Deep, rich blend of essential oils.  many fragrances feature 4 or more oils.  My customers who love Lampe Berger lamps, love these candles.

Textures, size variety and scaping.  It is so easy to mix a few different textures and size tapers, collinettes and even pillars together to make a statement centerpiece.

We have over 25 color choices available for you to decorate and  match with any interior.

3.  Iconic, classic, renaissance and socially responsible.

Did you know that Amos Ives Root was closely connected with the birth of aviation? In 1903, he personally visited and followed the work of Orville & Wilbur Wright. In fact, he was with the Wright brothers the first time they flew in Dayton, Ohio. When he submitted an account of that flight to a leading scientific magazine, he received no acknowledgement. So, in typical “can-do” fashion, A.I. published the article himself in his magazine, Gleanings In Bee Culture. This turned out to be the first published account of the Wright Brothers historic accomplishment.

Did you know that he helped and inspired Helen Keller?  After learning about the advances in educating blind and deaf children and contributing to help that effort, he received a four-page letter from Helen Keller thanking him for his kindness and support. For the rest of their lives, they remained close, personal friends.
